is your basic Dom Com where Paul and Cate Hennessy (played by John Ritter and Katey Sagal) attempt to ride herd on the burgeoning love life of their teenage daughters, bookish Kerry (Amy Davidson) and promiscuous Bridget (Kaley Cuoco).
Rounding out the family is son Rory (Martin Spanjers), who is Paul's only other source of testosterone, and thus they bond often. until the show was derailed by the death of John Ritter. Because of Ritter's death, the show's name was changed from the quirky .
The shows storylines were about a family patriarch named Paul Hennessy trying to stop his daughters from growing up too fast mainly in dating.

The next few episodes deal with his loss and how the Hennessy family moves on. Bridget was supposed to be in charge of the Ditch Day prank, in which she was to steal a rival school’s goat mascot.
Cate’s father, Jim Egan (James Garner), moves in to help and Cate’s very immature nephew, C. (David Spade), moves in for additional comedy relief. There was initially a great deal of curiosity about how the death of Ritter would impact the show. She asks Rory to do it instead and Kerry, tired of being a “goodie two-shoes,” wants to be part of it. Cate comes home soonafter and she’s not happy about the four-legged houseguest either.
Tragically, John passed away during the show's filming, but his influence clearly lived on in later seasons.
It goes without saying that we were all fortunate to have a few final moments of John doing what John did best, and that's just one of the things that made 8 Simple Rules a standout.
